Homeowner's Rainy Weather Checklist

Homeowner\'s Rainy Weather Checklist - Image 1

Another season of heavy rain and thunderstorms has returned to the Midwest after weeks of record-breaking drought. While this is great news for the late-season vegetable gardens, all that excess rain has to drain somewhere. Unfortunately for many homeowners, this often means leaking and flooding in their basements.

To stop this problem before it starts, we put together this helpful checklist for homeowners to ensure their basement stays clean and dry, even when it rains for days on end!

Exterior inspection

  • > Clean debris from gutters and downspouts to ensure proper water drainage.
  • > Inspect the exterior foundation for signs of leaks or cracks.
  • > Check the weatherstripping of windows and doors for any gaps or signs of wear.
  • > Ensure rainwater is properly drained and there is no standing water in the yard.

Interior inspection

  • > Inspect the interior basement walls for cracks or signs of leaks.
  • > Check the basement or crawl space for leaks, puddles, or water damage.
  • > Ensure your sump pump is running properly with adequate back up power.
  • > Ensure your dehumidifier filter is clean and the water tank is emptied or properly drained.
