Debunking Crawl Space Insulation Myths
Many homes with crawl spaces are insulated with standard fiberglass insulation. While this type of insulation is great for attics and walls within the home, it can wreak havoc in a damp, dark crawl space.
The better solution for crawl space insulation is our SilverGlo rigid foam insulation panels built especially for crawl spaces.
Fiberglass Insulation Myths
Most of the time, fiberglass insulation provides little benefit to your crawl space and can even create problems of its own. Fiberglass insulation requires a closed cavity be effective. When this type of insulation is installed in a vented crawl space, cold, wet air simply passes right through it and into your home.
Speaking of wet air, when insulation gets wet, it's R-value (or insulation performance) is reduced even further. When the crawl space is not properly waterproofed (and most are not), the insulation becomes sodden and completely ineffective.
Not only that, but fiberglass insulation is a mold magnet when it becomes wet. Mold spores attach to the paper facing and other organic components of insulation and rapidly multiply, decomposing the insulation even further. This mold growth can then spread to other organic material in the crawl space like wooden floor joists and beams. Eventually, this mold can even spread into your home.
The Better Solution
Unlike fiberglass insulation, SilverGlo is built especially for crawl spaces and is mold-resistant and mess-free. SilverGlo is installed on the walls of the crawl space where it is most effective at providing insulation. When installed along with our CleanSpace crawl space encapsulation system, the crawl space remains clean, dry, and effectively insulated without the mess of fiberglass.
