Finished Basement Windows: What You Need to Know

Finished Basement Windows: What You Need to Know - Image 1

Basement windows can be one of the most overlooked aspects of a basement finishing project. Plenty of builders opt for cheap materials like wood and metal that are prone to water damage and end up creating an eyesore.

To make matters worse, many basement windows don't seal properly. This allows cold winter air or warm, humid summer air to be pulled into the basement, increasing your energy bills and the risk of a damp, musty basement.

If you're planning to finish your basement, now is the time to replace those old windows with a modern, more energy efficient solution.

Finished Basement Windows: The Ins and Outs

Mid-State Basement Systems offers the EverLast basement window insert and sliding basement windows as part of our Total Basement Finishing services. Both styles of EverLast windows are made with energy-efficient double pane glass and all-vinyl trim, making them completely resistant to moisture and deterioration.

Once the window itself is taken care of, you'll also want to upgrade the window well to keep out dirt, leaves, and rain. We offer our covered SunHouse window well to do just that. It features a durable clear plastic cover that allows light in while keeping out everything you don't want in your window well, especially moisture!

Lastly, if you want to add a new bedroom to your basement, Ohio building codes require the installation of an egress or exit window. Mid-State Basement Systems offers our RockWell window well to keep your basement up-to-code while allowing more natural light into your basement.

A Note on Basement Window Waterproofing

Regardless of age, their location close to the ground makes basement windows particularly prone to water leaks. Along with your basement window installation, we also recommend addressing any gutter problems, extending the downspouts on your house, and re-grading if possible/necessary.

However, the best course of action to prevent leaky basement windows for good is to install an interior drainage system prior to finishing your basement. A special vertical window drain can be installed along with your sub-floor system to catch leaks and drain them via the sump pump.
