Basement Mold Prevention: Understanding the Signs & Symptoms

A damp, musty, leaky basement is the perfect environment for mold growth. Oftentimes, basements can have a significant mold problem that goes undetected for months or even years. 

By the time the mold becomes obvious, it's often a serious problem. Don't wait for mold to start affecting you and your family's health—Be on the lookout for these signs and symptoms of basement mold growth.

Signs of Mold in Your Basement

A musty smell in your basement can indicate much more than just a moisture or high humidity problem. It can also indicate the presence of airborne mold spores and/or mold growth in the basement.

If your basement smells musty, be sure to check any and all items stored in your basement for mold growth. Pay special attention to cardboard boxes, clothing, and furniture.

For basements that are finished with drywall, wood, and other organic materials, be sure to inspect these as well for signs of water damage and mold growth. This includes ceiling tiles, fiberglass insulation, and wood floors/paneling. 

I Found Evidence of Mold in My Basement: Now What? 

Untreated mold growth can lead to health problems such as sneezing, coughing, congestion and eye irritation. For people with asthma, allergies, or compromised immune systems, these symptoms can be more severe. If you discover mold in your basement, it's important to take steps to remove it to protect you and your family's health. 

First, dispose of any items, furniture, or materials with mold growth on them. For hard surfaces, mold can be scrubbed clean with a detergent and water. Be sure to wear Personal Protective Equipment when cleaning mold. For areas of mold larger than 10 square feet, cleanup should be handled only by mold remediation professionals.
